RDR2 on PS5: PS4 Compatibility and Buying Checklist
Yes, the PS4 version of Red Dead Redemption 2 is playable on PS5. The PlayStation listing checked for this guide labels it as a PS4 game and explicitly confirms PS5 playability. Backward compatibility should not be mistaken for confirmation of a native PS5 remaster.
Which version are you buying?
Look at the platform label on the product page, not only a search result saying “RDR2 PlayStation 5.” The verified listing here is PS4. A shop mentioning PS5 compatibility is answering where that product runs, not necessarily announcing a different edition.
This page does not confirm a future remaster, release date or new performance mode. If you are buying specifically for an advertised upgrade, require a current publisher announcement and the matching product listing. A rumor or a video thumbnail is not enough evidence for that purchase decision.
Disc and digital: check your console first
| Your copy | What to check |
|---|---|
| PS4 disc | You need a PS5 setup with a compatible disc drive; the disc must remain inserted to play. |
| Digital PS4 purchase | Use the account that owns the game and download it from the game library. |
| Subscription access | Check your current plan, region and catalog entitlement before assuming continued access. |
Sony advises keeping the console's system software updated. Its compatibility guidance also warns that some PS4 features may not carry over. Test your base game before buying extra content for it.
Do you need PS Plus for Story Mode?
The product listing separates single-player Story Mode from Online and marks PS Plus as required for online play. Do not confuse that Online requirement with buying a copy for the single-player campaign. If you access the game through a subscription rather than a purchased license, that entitlement has its own conditions.
Decide whether you want the complete game or an Online-only product before paying. Our Ultimate Edition comparison explains the bonus packages separately. Paying for a higher edition should be about the extras you want, not uncertainty about which product includes the story.
What about frame rate and a remaster?
This review verifies compatibility, not a frame-rate benchmark. We have not tested the game on your console, and the checked listing does not support a new performance guarantee. We therefore do not label this guide as a confirmed 60 FPS patch or native PS5 launch.
For any future update, compare the publisher's announcement with your installed version and platform. Keep RDR2 separate from news about the first Red Dead Redemption: they are different products. A rerelease of one does not establish a rerelease of the other.
Ready to start the campaign?
Once your copy launches, choose a manageable first session using the Story Mode beginner guide. The playtime planner distinguishes finishing the story from a full completion project. For the narrative setting rather than console compatibility, read the spoiler-light timeline.
