RDR2 perfect pelts: choose the right weapon

The three checks before you shoot

1. Find a three-star animal. Study it and check its displayed quality before committing to the hunt. Do not plan on turning a poor animal into a perfect pelt.
2. Read Show Info. The animal's in-game information is the final reference for appropriate weapons. A Varmint Rifle and Small Game Arrows serve different animals.
3. Make a clean, fatal shot. Aim for the head or a vital area. Repeated wounds and destructive ammunition can damage an ordinary pelt.

Why a pelt was not perfect

Wrong starting quality: check the stars before the kill. Wrong weapon: compare your choice with Show Info. Too much damage: multiple shots or explosive ammunition may spoil an ordinary animal's quality. A weapon being powerful is not the same as being suitable.

Check the material name before donating. Pearson's ordinary satchel recipes do not accept a legendary pelt as a substitute. Legendary hunts are a separate task.

Pelt or whole carcass?

Satchel crafting calls for the perfect animal materials listed in Pearson's menu. The hunting-request quest instead asks for perfect, unskinned carcasses. Skinning a requested animal can leave you without the item needed for that delivery.
