When Does RDR2 Take Place? Story Timeline Explained
Red Dead Redemption 2's main story takes place in 1899. The epilogue moves to 1907, before the first Red Dead Redemption's main story in 1911. RDR2 is a prequel, even though it was released after the first game.
The timeline at a glance
| Part | Year | What the date means |
|---|---|---|
| RDR2 main story | 1899 | The starting point for Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang. |
| RDR2 epilogue | 1907 | A later part of the same game's playable story. |
| Red Dead Redemption main story | 1911 | The first game's story follows the events of RDR2. |
These are narrative dates, not release dates. A search for “what year is RDR2 set in” usually wants 1899; a search specifically about the epilogue needs 1907. We keep both answers together so you do not need to open an ending explanation.
Where does RDR2 take place?
The setting is a fictionalized United States, not a recreation of a single real state. The world includes Ambarino, New Hanover, Lemoyne, West Elizabeth and New Austin. These names belong to the game's geography; do not treat them as modern travel destinations.
For location help, use the region labels on the collectibles hub rather than searching for a real-world city equivalent. A historical setting answer will not tell you whether a particular route is available at your current point in the story. Check each guide's access warnings before taking a long trip.
Is RDR2 connected to RDR1?
Yes: the games share characters and the history of the Van der Linde gang. RDR2 supplies earlier context for the first game. You can understand the basic premise without reading a complete plot summary.
Our recommendation for a new player who wants chronological order is RDR2, then Red Dead Redemption. Playing in release order is also a reasonable choice if you prefer learning the characters as the original audience did. This is a reading-order recommendation, not a required unlock sequence.
Story time is not playtime
The span from 1899 to 1907 does not mean you play through every intervening day. Narrative jumps and your actual time at the controller are different measurements. We do not assign an exact number of in-world days to every mission.
If you meant “how long is RDR2,” open the story-length and session-planning guide. That page separates a story-focused run from optional activities and the in-game 100% target. It also includes the epilogue in the explanation of what finishing the story means.
Keep your first run spoiler-light
Use this timeline to establish the setting, then let the missions introduce the cast. Searching character endings or grave locations before finishing can reveal much more than a date. The beginner checklist is a safer next stop when you want practical help without an ending recap.
